this morning, in between snooze sessions of my alarm clock, i had my only one recurring dream.
this is how it all went down:
{i am in college, it is finals time, and i've only just realized that i missed taking two of my exams for classes that i couldn't even remember that i had! i couldn't even remember the names of the courses!!}
now, this was this morning's version of my recurring dream - but all the others are some similar versions of me not taking a test, or frantically trying to get to the test site, because i have, at the last possible second, realized that i even had the class to begin with. (in my first round of college, these dreams creeped up with the added panic of realization of the course because i had chosen to skip that class all semester long - skipped the class in my dream, mind you :))
when i finally woke up today, i wondered....does anyone else have this dream?? and what could it possibly mean? especially since i continue to have it throughout my life....
so, i did a little research. and although i can't find an exact match for this dream scenario - i did find some interesting information...check it out
To dream that you are taking an exam, indicates that you are being put to the test or being scrutinized in some way. These dreams highlight some anxiety or agitation that you are experiencing in your waking life. In such dreams, you may find that you cannot answer any of the questions on the test, that the test is in some foreign language or that your pencil keeps breaking during the test. Perhaps time is running out and you cannot complete the exam in the allowed time. Or perhaps, you arrive late and miss the exam. These factors contribute to failing the dream test. These dreams usually have to do with your self-esteem and confidence or the lack of. You tend to believe in the worst about yourself and are often overly worried that you are not making the grade and measuring up to other people's expectations of you. You may also experience the fear of not being accepted, not being prepared, or not being good enough.Test dreams also suggest that you are feeling unprepared for a challenge. Rarely, these dreams are about the actual content of the test, but rather it is more about the process and how you feel during the exam taking process. These feelings often parallel how you are actually feeling in a particular challenge or situation in your waking life.
Test dreams are also an indication that you are being judged. These dreams serve as a signal for you to examine an aspect of yourself that you may have been neglecting and need to pay more attention to. You may be harboring some guilt because you did not prepare enough for a school exam, meeting, business project, or some project. Most of the time, though, people who have such dreams are unlikely to fail a test in real life. This dream is rooted in the fear and anxiety that you may not meet other's standards. You are afraid to let others down.

(interestingly enough, i did have a meeting this morning that i was not prepared for and i am feeling a bit overwhelmed with schoolwork and my actually work work lately)
and then this is discouraging :(
Examination
The grandfather of obstacle dreams, with a classic simplicity of meaning. If you failed the examination, the dream is telling you that your ambitions are beyond your ability. However, if you passed the exam easily or it presented no major problem to you, it predicts comfortable achievement of all your hopes.
(i guess if i missed the tests entirely, i must have failed them right?)
i love dreams and dreaming - i don't remember them all that often, but i really enjoy when i can remember one, or part of one, in detail. and i don't necessarily think dreams predict the future - but sometimes i think they can be a good indication of "stuff" that's on your mind or concerns you might be suppressing. just so amazing how the brain can work like this, while we are SLEEPING!!!
so, tell me - what kind of crazy dreams do you have?
hugs,
rachie

I also used to have this exact same dream, all the time starting in college, and continue to (every once in a while) have them even now. But I've tried explaining them to others (assuming that lots of people have had a similar dream) only to find that no one else does. Maybe it's like that dream we BOTH had about Jackie getting a screw drilled into her skull from a swing set. Weird sister stuff!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst, it was so fun to meet you at Women of Faith, Rachel!
ReplyDeleteI have a freakishly similar recurring dream. That all of a sudden I found out a class, that I didn't even know I was enrolled in, is having an exam and I missed it. In some of them, I am still in college but have a locker on campus (like I would have had in high school) and for the life of me cannot remember the combination to the lock to take my belongings out of the locker. In other versions I have already gone through the graduation ceremony and started my job only to be approached by my boss letting me know that I did not, in fact, actually graduate because I had failed classes during my senior year and didn't have the final grades until after the graduation ceremony. Also, in all versions I am in college, but in some of the dreams that "professors" are actually teachers that I had in junior high and high school.
The symbolism that you found is super interesting. I have never really bothered to look it up - I usually just wake up feeling totally relieved that it was just a dream.
